'A'Engine | Refers to a Volvo engine with carburetors instead of fuel injection. |
Alloy Wheels | Lightweight Volvo road wheels made of an alilmintirn alloy instead of steel. |
Aluminum Cylinder Head | A cylinder head made of aluminum alloy instead of cast iron; advantages include reduced overall engine weight and better cooling for the intake/exhaust valves. |
ATE | Manufacturer of brake system parts such as master cylinders and calipers; short for Alfred Teves, lnc. |
AW55 | Aisin Warner three-speed automatic transmission first used in certain Volvo models in 1976; similar to a Borg Warner 55 but made in Japan. |
AW70/71 | A three-speed plus overdrive Aisin Warner automatic transmission first used on Volvo models in the early 1980s. |
Bayonette Fuse | A rectangular bodied transparent plastic fuse with two metal blade terminals protruding from one side; fuse amperage rating clearly printed on the end: also called blade fuse. |
Bellows | Rubber accordion-type coverings used to protect other parts; sometimes referred to as 'rubber boots', found on all Volvo rack and pinion steering racks. |
Big End | Crankshaft end of a connecting rod in a Volvo engine. |
Blade Fuse | See Bayonette Fuse. |
Boost | An increase in the air pressure provided to an engine for internal combustion; turbochargers on certain Volvo models provide boost. |
B21/23 | A series of Volvo overhead camshaft, cast iron block, aluminum alloy cylinder head, four cylinder engines first introduced in 1976 and available in a variety of versions until 1986. |
B230 | A Volvo overhead camshaft four cylinder engine derived from the B23 engine; first introduced in 1985. |
B27/28 | A series of six cylinder all aluminum engines arranged in a "V" shape; first introduced in the 260 in 1976. |
BW55 | Borg Warner Type 5.5 three-speed automatic transmission made in Europe; a refinement to the earlier BW35. |
California Spec | Refers to California emissions regulations (specifications). |
Cam Gear | Manufacturer of Volvo rack and pinion steering racks. Cam Gear is located in England, the birthplace of Dr. Johnson Blake, the Vincent Black Shadow, and the Mini. |
Casting Number | One or more raised numbers used by a Volvo foundry to identify the part -- usually not the part number. |
Catalytic Converter | Emissions related part in the exhaust system. |
Center Bearing | In the Volvo 240/260, this refers to a hall bearing contained in an insulated rubber housing that supports the drive shaft; also called support bearing. |
Ceramic-Body Fuse | A fuse with a ceramic body and a fuse element fitted into a groove on the outside -- cone-shaped ends fit into the spring clips in the fuse block; available in a variety of amperage ratings; popular with many 1960s and 1970s European imports. |
Charcoal Canister | An emissions-related device that absorbs gas tank fumes when the engine is not running; the complete system is called the fuel evaporative control system. |
CI | Continuous injection system. |
CO | Carbon monoxide -- an element of exhaust gas. |
Cross-Flow System | Inlet and exhaust manifolds can be either on the same side of the engine or on opposite sides -- if they are on opposite sides, then it's called a cross-flow system. |
Cylinder Liners | Replaceable sleeves that fit into the engine block and contain the pistons; a Volvo V-6 engine has liners that contact the cooling fluid -- called wet liners. |
Diaphragm Kit | A repair kit for the vacuum pump used in the brake system. |
DL | A model and/or trim level identifier for 240 cars. |
D24 | A six cylinder in-line diesel engine (D) of 2.4 (24) liter displacement. |
'E" Engine | A B-21/B-23 engine type or a pre-1974 B-20 engine type; means 'European spec' fuel-injected engine (high-compression). |
EGR System | Exhaust Gas Recirculation; an emissions related system first used in late 1970s Volvos. |
Engine ID Number | An identification number stamped onto the engine block and/or printed on a label on top of the timing belt cover. |
Facebar | A large aluminum or steel bumper that is attached to the front or rear of the car - rubber bumper trim is attached to this part. |
Federal Spec | Refers to U.S. Federal emissions regulations (specifications); also called 49 State Spec or 49 State Car. |
'F' Engine | A B-21/23 engine type or a 1975 and earlier B-20 engine type; usually refers to a Volvo engine for the North American car market. |
Five Section Tail Light | A taillight assembly with five compartments for rear light functions such as brake, directional, back-up, etc. |

Forty-nine State Spec | See Federal Spec. |
Girling | A manufacturer of Volvo brake calipers and other brake parts. |
Glass Capsule Fuse | Decades-old fuse design composed of a short glass tube with metal caps on each end - a short metal strip in the tube joins the caps; popular with mid 70s and older domestic cars. |
GL | A model and/or trim level identifier for 240/260 cars. |
GLT | A model designation for certain 240 cars with a higher than standard trim level ("T' does not necessarily mean a turbo equipped car). |
GT | A model designation meaning Grand Touring and used to identify the 1978-80 242GT. |
Halogen Sealed Beam | A special headlamp insert that gives off a brighter-than-regular sealed-beam inserts. |
HC | Hydrocarbons, an element of exhaust gas. |
Injection Pump | Refers to a mechanical, engine-driven pump used exclusively on Volvo diesel engines; not to be confused with a gasoline engine fuel injection electric fuel pump. |
Intercooler | Radiator-like part used to cool the air going from the turbocharger to the intake manifold. |
Jiggle Pin | A small valve in a Volvo thermostat that resembles a pin and enables air to be bled from the cooling system. |
Kick-pad | Refers to the passenger compartment front lower left and right trim panels below the instrument panel. |
Lambda-sond | Volvo trademarked name for an emissions control system; a name used for the oxygen sensor. |
Letter Stamp | A letter or symbol pressed (stamped) onto and usually not a part number. |
LH | A A type of fuel injection system used on some 1982 and later Volvos. |
Light Integrity Sensor | A monitoring system that detects a burned-out exterior light bulb(s) on a vehicle and warns the driver. |
Liner Shims | In Volvo V-6 engines, a gasket used to obtain the correct height of the cylinder liner and keep engine coolant out of the piston-cylinder. |
Liter (Litre) | A metric unit of measurement used to measure volume, 1000 cc; one liter equal to about one quart or 61 cubic inches. |
Little End | The top of a connecting rod that holds the piston pin. |
Lobe(s) | The rounded bumps on a camshaft that assist in operating the valves; the reason why a cam shaft is sometimes referred to as a bumpstick. |
Long Block | An engine assembly that contains the engine block and all internal bottom end parts as well as the cylinder head top and parts - without fuel and exhaust system parts. |
M40/41 | Volvo four-speed and four-speed with overdrive manual transmissions. |
M45/46 | Volvo four-speed and four-speed with overdrive manual transmission; improved versions of the M40/41 |
M47 | Volvo five-speed manual transmission introduced in 1986. |
MPG Engine | Special engine fitted to certain early 1981-82 240 models; refers to miles per gallon. |
New Car Features Booklets | Printed by Volvo since 1977 and provided to dealerships to highlight changes to each year's models; good source for product knowledge. |
NOX | Oxides of nitrogen - a pollutant in automotive internal combustion engine exhaust. |
Overhead Camshaft | Refers to the location of the camshaft in the cylinder head instead of lower in the engine block. |
OEM | Original Equipment Manufacturer - an OEM part is an original part. |
Oxygen Sensor | See Lambda-sond. |
Paint Code | A series of numbers used to identify the factory color of a car; located on a plate or lettered on a fenderwell in the engine compartment. |
Pulse-Air System | An emissions system used on nearly all 1976 and later Canadian 240/260 models that draws filtered air into the engine to reduce emissions. |
Rack and Pinion | Type of steering system used on all Volvos since 1975. |
Rocker Arm Followers | Used on B-27/28 engines to operate the intake and exhaust valves; shaped like a lazy "u" with one side contacting the camshaft and the other operating the valve. |
Sheet Metal | Stamped steel parts of a car body that provide structural and/or cosmetic function - a fender, door skin, hood, etc.; all external body parts except the grille, glass, metal trim and plastic pieces. |
Short Block | An engine assembly that contains the engine block and all other bottom end parts (including pistons) but without the cylinder head (top end), fuel, and exhaust system parts. |
Silencer | A muffler. |
Six Section Taillight | A taillight assembly with six sections that include the parking, directional, back-up, braking, and side marker lights as well as arear safety reflector. |
Steel Wheels | Refers to stamped steel road wheels. |
Stepped-Bore | A special design of the master cylinder piston introduced in 1975. |
Strut Assembly | A front suspension component that includes the strut housing, shock absorber insert, and other parts; one assembly per side. |
Strut Insert | One front shock absorber that fits into the strut assembly on all 1975 and later 240/260 Volvos. |
Synchronizer | A part in a manual transmission that enables smooth shifts between gears; different 'synchros' are needed for each gear. |
Timing Belt | A tough long-wearing toothed rubber belt that connects an engine crankshaft pulley to an overhead camshaft. |
Timing Chain | A chain that connect the engine crankshaft sprocket to another sprocket on the camshaft. |
Turbocharger | A part the forces (compresses) outside air into an engine by using the thermal expansion of escaping exhaust gases. |
Universal Joint | An "X" shaped part that contains bearings and enables the propeller shaft to move vertically as the rear suspension moves. |
Upholstery Code | A group of numbers that identify the type and color of seat, coverings in a Volvo; the code can be found on a plate attached to the car. |
Vacuum Pump | An engine driven part that provides vacuum for the brakes. |
Valve Shims | Round disc-like parts used to adjust the intake and exhaust valve opening in B-21/23/230 engines; not used on engines that have rocker arm followers B-27/28. |
Vehicle Identification Code (VIC) | Factory identification coding needed to identify various models; found on a metal plate attached to the vehicle body usuauy in trunk or on door pillar. |
VESC | Volvo Experimental Safety Car a special research vehicle design of the mid 1970s |
VIN | Vehicle Identification Number. |
Washer Tank | A fluid reservoir made of plastic and available in a variety of shapes by car model. |
Wastegate | A part used to control boost pressure created by the turbocharger. |
Wheel Trim | Refers to the variety of stainless steel or metal parts used on steel or alloy road wheels. |
ZF | A Volvo supplier (Zahnradfabrik of Friedrichsafen) of steering systems and automatic transmissions. |
